A transparent light emitting device (11) which converts the wavelength of primary light and emits secondary light. This transparent light emitting device (11) is provided with: a plate-like transparent member (30) that has an end face (31) and a main surface (34); a light source (20) that makes primary light enter into the transparent member (30); and a fluorescent member (50) that converts the wavelength of primary light emitted from the main surface (34). The fluorescent member (50) contains a polymer that has uniaxially oriented molecules having refractive anisotropy and a fluorescent dye that has phosphor molecules and emits secondary light by absorbing at least some of the primary light emitted from the main surface (34). This transparent light emitting device (11) achieves high transparency, high energy efficiency, in-plane uniformity of luminous intensity and uniformity of emission orientation.
