[Also in Division F1F] A carriage 1, Fig. 3, formed of two symmetrical stirrups 13 and 14 bolted together and supported by rollers 20 and 25 and movable on a rail 2 comprising rigid U-shaped sections 3 and 4 and humped sections 5 and 6 has two spindles 28 and 29 mounting cylindrical rollers 30 and 31 which pinch a flexible rubber or plastics material conduit 9. A fluid under pressure is supplied to the conduit on one or other sides of the rollers thereby forcing the carriage to move along the rail. The conduit has a central core 10 and is free to expand to the limits imposed by strips of steel 11 and 12 abutting the flanges of the U- shaped sections 3 and 4, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a carriage 37 supported on rollers 36 is mounted inside a hollow rail 35, and a spindle 44 guided in slots 45 carries a pinching roller 43 adapted to contact conduit 40 via an expansion limiting strip 41, the conduit and strip being mounted in a U- shaped channel 39. To control movement of the carriage further rollers 49, mounted on a spindle 48 carried by a push rod 47, run on a ramp 50, which may have a profile such that a yoke 46 carrying the roller 43 will move up and down in a vertical direction thereby varying the degree of contact of the pinching roller on the conduit 40.</p> |
