PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new technology capable forming hydrogen from a hydrogen-containing compound such as methane while suppressing the generation of by-products.SOLUTION: A hydrogen production apparatus includes: a reactor in which a catalyst containing silicon carbide and nickel is provided, and into which a gas containing a hydrogen-containing compound is supplied; and a microwave irradiation part for irradiating the catalyst in the reactor with microwave in a multimode. Hydrogen is formed by advancing thermal decomposition of the hydrogen-containing compound in the presence of the catalyst which is activated by being heated by the irradiation of microwave in a multimode by the microwave irradiation part. The catalyst includes: a heat generation part which contains silicon carbide and is heated through the absorption of the microwave; and a reaction acceleration part which contains nickel, is arranged at a position adjacent to the heat generation part, and activated by the heat supplied from the heat generation part, and accelerates the thermal decomposition of the hydrogen-containing compound. |
