Device and corresponding method for depositing a bed of powder on a surface (1), the device comprising a deposition module (2) configured to sweep over the surface delivering powder to the surface. The deposition module comprises at least one electromagnetic-response probe (5) able to analyse a portion (6) of the bed of powder that has been delivered. The invention finds an application in selective laser melting or sintering machines.
