The present invention pertains to a nematic liquid crystal composition useful as a liquid crystal display material and having a negative dielectric constant anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;), and a liquid crystal display element using the same. The liquid crystal composition of this application has adequately low viscosity (&eegr;), adequately low rotational viscosity (γ1), a large elastic modulus (K33), and a negative dielectric constant anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) with a large absolute value, without lowering the refractive index anisotropy (&Dgr;n) or nematic/isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni). With this composition it is possible to provide a liquid crystal display element with no or minimal display defects such as VA-type defects, and with a rapid response speed and excellent display quality. The liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is useful as a liquid crystal display element for active matrix driving, and can be applied to VA-type, PSVA-type or other types of liquid crystal display element. |
