Disclosed is a battery management apparatus and method capable of recording the first time of use or hours of use. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the battery management apparatus comprises: a sensing unit which senses a charging or discharging current of an assembly including at least two secondary battery cells; a real-time clock which outputs current time information when the sensing unit senses the charging or discharging current; and a memory unit which stores the current time information outputted by the real-time clock. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the battery management apparatus comprises: a sensing unit which senses a charging or discharging current of an assembly including at least two secondary battery cells; a real-time clock which outputs current time information; a calculation unit which makes the current time information recorded as a use start time by using the real-time clock when the sensing unit starts to sense the charging or discharging current, makes the current time information recorded as a use stop time by using the real-time clock when the sensing unit stops sensing the charging or discharging current, and calculates hours of continuous use by using the use start time and the use stop time stored in a memory unit; and the memory unit which stores the use start time and the use stop time. According to the present invention, the first time of use or the hours of use of the battery is recorded. Therefore, a manufacturer or a manager can correctly identify the first time of use of the battery and use the same as data for battery management such as a decision to replace the battery and the like.
