A device for aiding a musician to memorise music comprises a mask which can be placed on or in front of a score and has some areas through which the score is visible and others which obscure parts of the score. The device may be a transparent sheet having non-transparent material thereon in selected areas. The non-transparent areas may take any of a number of different shapes. A musician may initially play through the section of the score that he/she wishes to memorise without using the mask until he/she has been able to attain some degree of memorisation. Thereafter, the mask may be placed on the score so as to obscure some portions of it but not others. The musician may then play through the score again, for example several times, thus having to play the obscured portions from memory. The invention extends to a kit of parts comprising two or more of the masks, each to obscure a different amount of a musical score, so that using the masks in succession the musician is forced to play more and more of the score from memory. In another embodiment, the invention provides an electronic device, such as a tablet computer, which is operable for displaying a musical score on a display device and which is provided with means for electronically inhibiting the display of, or obscuring, portions of the score in the manner of a mask or masks as described above. |
