1,211,941. Catalytic electrodes comprising unsintered PTFE films. LEESONA CORP. 15 Feb., 1968 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 7424/68. Heading H1B. An electrode comprises an unsintered PTFE film having in intimate contact with one surface a catalytic material containing an electrocatalyst. The catalytic material may comprise a metal black and optionally a particulate hydrophobic polymer, and be sprayed, or rolled as a paste, on to the film, which is then dried and heated at 200-300‹ C. A porous support may be added. The electrode is used with the catalyst contacting the electrolyte and the film contacting a gas. In the examples electrodes are constructed using Pt black and colloidal PTFE, with a Pt gauze support, and are used as both electrodes in a hydrogen/air fuel cell with KOH electrolyte; a similar electrode with a nickel mesh support is used in a zinc/air cell having a KOH electrolyte, being fitted into a phenol-formaldehyde resin frame to form an envelope cathode. Other suitable catalytic metals, hydrophobic polymers, metal support screens and anode metals are listed. |
