[Also in Division B6] A porous writing tip for a reservoir pen is formed by enclosing a cluster of intertwined metal fibres in an adherent liquidproof sheath. Stainless steel wires 1 are enclosed in a sheath 2 of nickel, deposited electrolytically. The nickel may be overcoated with hard chrome, to resist wear. The end 3 is ground to a point. The sheath may alternatively be formed by vapour deposition, on immersing the wires in a liquid solder and then passing them through a die. In another form (Fig. 5, not shown), the wires are placed in a stainless steel tube which is drawn through a die to reduce its diameter and cause it to grip the wires. The wires may alternatively be gripped by closing the seam of a half open free-rolled metal tube. An outer covering of plastics material may be formed by extrusion to produce a larger diameter writing tip, or by immersing the wires in a lacquer adhesive and withdrawing them through a die. |
