In a rack-and-pinion assembly for a vehicle steering gear, the rack 5 of a rack bar 6 is held in mesh with the pinion 1 by a resilient plastics shoe 7 having a longitudinal slot 8 to receive the rack bar 6, the sides 9, 10 of the shoe being compressed between the rack bar and the sides of a recess 7a of the pinion housing 3. The sides 8a, 8b of the recess 8 diverge outwardly at an angle a 1 slightly less than the angle a between the sides 6a, 6b of the rack bar, and the free width d 1 across flanges 11, 12 of the shoe is slightly less than the width of recess 7a. The shoe is adjustable in a direction normal to the rack bar by a screw 15 bearing on a plate 14. One end of the pinion 1 is supported by a pin- and-socket bearing of the type described in Specification 1,248,981. |
