The method involves determining (102) exhaust gas temperature (Tref) of pure fossil diesel fuel based on predetermined exhaust gas model as reference value. The determination of reference value is carried out in accordance with current engine power. A present actual value of fossil diesel fuel is determined using exhaust gas temperature sensor. A temperature deviation (Tdiff) is calculated (106) on basis of difference between actual value and reference value, and the calculated value provides increased share of biofuels in diesel fuel mixture. An independent claim is included for a device for determining composition of diesel fuel mixture for internal combustion engine in motor vehicle.
