Alkali-metal salts of polyvalent metal chelates are obtained by reacting the nitriles of the chelating synthetic amino acids with alkali metal hydroxides in molar amount sufficient to form the desired salt but insufficient for the full hydrolysis of the nitrile, and at the same time with the polyvalent-metal oxides or hydroxides in molar amount sufficient to form the chelates, in aqueous media and at about the boiling temperature of the aqueous medium until ammonia release has been completed, and by adjusting the pH of the media to the required levels by the addition of the acid form of the chelating amino acid. The nitriles used may be those of the formula N#C-CH 2 -NR-CH 2 -C#N, where R is a group of the formula -CH 2 CN, -CH 2 CH 2 OH or where x is 2 or 3, y is from 0 to 4 and one or two of the cyano groups may be replaced by hydroxymethyl groups. |
