A method of recovering fuel vapour from an engine fuel system comprises adsorbing the fuel vapour on a first adsorbent bed 4, Fig. 1 in an adsorbing portion of a cycle, desorbing the fuel vapour with purying air in a purying portion of the cycle and passing the desorbed fuel through a second adsorbent bed to the engine, fuel vapours being prevented from going to the bed in the adsorbing portion of the cycle. Vapour from the carburetter bowl 12 and fuel tank 16 passes via conduits 34 pressure balance valve 6 and conduits 36 and 32 to the adsorbent bed 4 and is prevented from contacting adsorbent bed 20 by a flap valve 22. On operation of the purge control valve 8 vapours are desorbed from bed 4 by air passing via conduit 30 and pass via flap valve 22 to adsorbent bed 20 which adsorbs part of the initial surge and later desorbs it after the bed 4 has been desorbed. The vapours pass through purge control valve 8 to the intake manifold 14: In a modification an additional adsorbent bed is arranged in conduit 40. The adsorbent bed is activated carbon. |
