<p>1,178,585. Treating polymer surfaces. M. & T. CHEMICALS Inc. 23 Aug., 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No. 38766/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C7] Substrates made from<SP> </SP>a halogen-containing polymer are treated prior to coating with a metal by (a) contacting the polymer surface with an alcoholic solution of an alkali metal alkoxide, (b) oxidizing the surface. The metallic layer is then applied by contact with a solution of a salt of the metal also containing a reducing agent. The polymer may be a homopolymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or ethylene dichloride or a copolymer thereof and is treated with a C 1 -C 12 alkoxide at 2-106‹ C. for up to 80 hours. The oxidizing agent may be oxygen, potassium permanganate, chromic acid, perbenzoic acid, peracetic acid or hydrogen peroxide. The surface is thereafter rinsed with aqueous acidic stannous chloride solution and aqueous acidic palladium chloride coated with nickel by contact with aqueous nickelous chloride containing sodium hypophosphite and sodium citrate or similarly coated with silver, cobalt, copper or gold.</p> |
