1,180,483. Universal joints. POLYMER CORP. 9 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 21509/67. Heading F2U. In a universal joint permitting relative axial movement between a shaft 10 formed with grooves 12, and a sleeve 14 provided with internal teeth 18, e.g. to connect the wobbler of a roll to a driving spindle in a rolling mill, wear of the teeth 18 is reduced by providing surface rather than line contact between the teeth and grooves, the drive surface of the grooves 12 having identical profiles with the drive surfaces of the teeth. As shown, the grooves 12 have a circular profile of radius R 1 and centred at A on a circle 13, the centre O of which is the centre of rotation. The teeth 18 are formed of nylon and are dovetailed into the sleeve and fixed by set screws, their drive surfaces for forward and reverse rotation having circular profiles of radius R 1 c, R 1 D equal to R 1 , and centres C and D also on circle 13, and also having flattened centre portions 20 providing clearances to facilitate assembly of the joint and to permit lateral and circumferential misalignment of the shaft and sleeve. Each tooth 18 may be formed from two axially aligned parts (18a, 18b), Fig. 6 (not shown), and may be tapered radially at its ends, Fig. 7 (not shown). A prior art tooth is stated to have a circular profile of radius R 2 , less than R 1 , and having the same centre. The sleeve 14 may join two similar shafts 10.
