<p>An audio communications system comprises a stereo headset (fig. 1 or A, fig. 7) and a second stereo headset (B) or audio device (E), each of which determines its geographical location (via eg. GPS, INS, SLAM, an altitude meter etc.) and orientation in two or more axes 104, 105, 204, 205, 304, 305 (via eg. a compass, accelerometer or gyroscope), transmits this location and an audio (eg. voice) signal, receives signals from the other headset/device, and modifies the received audio signal using the received location and its own location to place the received audio signal in a 3D audio space via a 3D audio engine. The user may then perceive the directivity of the incoming signal in 3D. Aspects of the invention include incorporating the system into a helmet (figs. 4-6) and using audio or geographical location beacons, volume increases for closer sources and Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) to place the sound in the listeners aural field.</p> |
