In a process and apparatus for hot dipping elongate metal such as wire, hand or strip e.g. Cu, molten metal in a main container 4 is connected to a process container 1 via conduit 5, the molten metal passing into container 1 to fill it sufficiently to coat the wire 3 which is passed via nozzles 2 and 14 which are below the level of the melt lengthwise and horizontally through the container. In one embodiment the molten metal e.g. Sn is passed into container 1 by means of a vacuum system 9 connected to a vacuum chamber 6 which is connected to process chamber 1. The level to which the melt rises is controlled by means of electrode 10 which when contacted by the melt operates a valve to cut off the vacuum pump. The process container 1, conduit 5 and vacuum chamber 6 are enclosed by insulating medium 13 and electric heaters 11 independently control the temperature of 1, 5 and 6. The coating thickness is controlled by nozzle 14 and the coated wire may be cooled with water. The flow of melt from 4 to container 1 may alternatively be effected by applying a pressure to container 4.</p> |
