A hinge for an ophthalmic mounting comprises a temple portion 20 having barrels 26, 27 and a front portion 30 having a barrel 36, which barrels when assembled establish confronting relatively movable faces 28, 38 and 29, 39; a pintle in the form of a machine screw 50; and a unitary member of resilient plastics material in the form of a boot 40 having a cavity 42 into which the barrel 36 fits, walls 44, 46 fitting roughly between the pairs of confronting faces. Wear and drop due to repeated opening of the mounting is reduced, and the boot 40 allows a greater latitude in manufacturing tolerances than before. By using boots of non-uniform cross-section, the angle between the vertical and the plane of frame 10 to which portion 30 is attached may be varied to suit the wearer, Fig. 4 (not shown) as may also the angle between the plane in which the barrel or barrels of one of the hinge portions lies and the centre line of the base of the other hinge portion, Fig. 5 (not shown). In a five barrel hinge member, two separate boots may be slipped over the two barrels of the two barrelled hinge portion or a unitary moulded boot having more than one cavity may be employed. Suitable materials for the boot include the acetal resins, polycarbonates, fluorocarbons and polyamide resins. |
