<p>High speed data communications using aircraft as transmission nodes to provide line of sight transmission avoiding ground level obstacles. A data communication system comprises a first data source that transmits data through the air; a second data source remote from the first which receives and/or transmits data through the air; and at least one aircraft that receives and transmits data through the air from and to the first and second data sources. Also disclosed is a high speed data communications system whereby data transmitted from a first source to an aircraft in flight may be processed (at the aircraft or at a second source) on the basis of data received from a second source, and response data generated accordingly and transmitted to the first source. The communications may relate to high-frequency trading, with the data being stock price information from first and second markets, and securities execution orders being generated. Through the air communications may be by free-space radio waves (e.g. microwaves) or optical (e.g. laser).</p> |
