A method for producing isoprene comprising enzymatically converting a C5H10O alcohol to isoprene, wherein said C5H10O alcohol is 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol, 2-methylbut-2-en-1-ol, 3-methylbut-3-en-2-ol, or 2-methylbut-3-en-1-ol, by an enzyme at least 70% identical to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:1, wherein said enzyme has alkenol dehydratase activity.
