The present invention relates to a portable terminal and a method for controlling the same. The portable terminal activates an operation mode corresponding to a specific shape and turns off sensors that are not used in a currently activated operation mode among multiple sensors provided in the portable terminal when the portable terminal having a flexible display unit changes to the specific shape by a warping, bending, or folding action. The portable terminal comprises: the flexible display capable of warping to change into at least two different shapes; the multiple sensors; and a controller which activates a first operation mode corresponding to a first shape if the flexible display unit warps and changes to the first shape and controls operation of one among at least one sensor related to the activated first operation mode and at least one sensor not related to the first operation mode.
