1,127,773. Extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 4 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 6532/65. Heading B3P. A tubular article is formed by hydrostatic extrusion of a tubular billet 8 using a mandrel 10 supported within the billet and which passes therewith through the extrusion die 2. The latter is supported within a pressure container 1 by copper and rubber sealing rings 4, 5. Container 1 is filled with liquid 13 and is pressurized by a plunger 3 fitted with copper and rubber sealing rings 6, 7. Mandrel 9 has a head 11 sealing against the rear end 12 of the billet. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the rear end of the mandrel has a conical head (14) which may pass completely through the die orifice to enable the whole of the billet to be extruded. In other embodiments, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the billet is closed at either its rear or leading end and a plain cylindrical mandrel is used. After extrusion, the mandrel is removed from the extruded tube by slitting it open. |
