The invention comprises N-acyl derivatives of 2,6-dichlorothiobenzamide wherein the acyl group is that of a mono-carboxylic acid, or that of a dicarboxylic acid of which each carbonyl group is attached to a benzamide nitrogen atom. The novel compounds may be produced by the reaction of 2,6-dichlorothiobenzamide with the appropriate acid chloride or acid anhydride, preferably in an inert solvent. The reaction may be effected in the presence or absence of a base, usually at an elevated temperature, for example in the range 30 DEG C. to 150 DEG C. When forming compounds where the acyl group is that of oxalic or malonic acid, S-acyl-N-acyl derivatives may be formed as by-products, e.g. 2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1,3-thiazolin - 4,5 - dione and 2 - (2,6 - dichlorophenyl) - 1,3 - thiazine - 4,6 - dione. The examples include N - (mono - acyl) - 2,6 - dichlorothiobenzamides N - (2,6 - dichlorothiobenzoyl) dicarboxylic imides, and N,N1-bis-(2,6-dichlorothiobenzoyl) dicarboxylic amides.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise an N-acyl derivative of 2, 6-dichlorothiobenzamide, wherein the acyl group is that of a monocarboxylic acid, or that of a dicarboxylic acid of which each carbonyl group is attached to a benzamide nitrogen atom, and an inert carrier or a surface active agent, or both. The composition may be in the form of a wettable powder, a dust, a concentrate, a solution, an emulsifiable concentrate, an emulsion or granules. The invention also comprises a method of eradicating weeds from a crop area by treating the area with an N-acyl derivative of 2, 6-dichlorothiobenzamide as above or a herbicidal composition containing such a compound as described above. |
