In the type of sign wherein a travelling matrix of pivoted elements 30 has selected elements tripped columnwise by a column of pins (only one 53 shown) actuated by electromagnetic means 52, so as to expose one of their two contrasting faces 31, 32 thus to display the desired total resultant image; each element 30 comprises (Fig. 2) a pair of plastics material pressings 31, 32 plugged together as to embrace collars 25 on a vertical shaft (20) forming part of a travelling endless articulated chain mechanism (Figs. 1 and 9, not shown) each element carrying a reversing lug 36 for engagement with the setting pins 53 (Fig. 8) and with parts of an imagecancelling device (Fig. 5). Cancelling device (Fig. 5).-In passing from a convex guide surface 41 to a concave one 42 (these surfaces preventing rotation) the reversing lug 36 of each element 30 is engaged in a gap 45 between plates 43, 44 at the vertical level of each row of reversing lugs. Thus faces 31, 32 inevitably become the trailing and leading faces respectively consequently it is always face 32 which is engaged by abutment 420 and constrained to rotate so that it finally is exposed radially outwardly. Setting device (Fig. 8).-On emerging from surface 42 of the cancelling device, the reversing lugs 36 of selected ones of a column of elements are engaged by pins 53; the elements are thus rotated. If rotated insufficiently owing- to imperfection or error, the element is restored to its original position by engagement of its leading edge with a string 54: this prevents ambiguity. If rotated sufficiently, its leading edge will distend string 54 enough for rotation to continue, the element being finally rotated into place by engagement with an abutment 56, its edge being bevelled at a central region 37 in order to roll on string 54. |
