The invention comprises fuel cell electrolyte matrix composed of a compound representable by the formula where M and M<SP>111</SP> are trivalent metals, M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, n is 1 or 2 and p is 0 or any number and having electrolyte absorbed in it. The preferred compound is LiAlO 2 . The structure may be made by mixing a divided salt or oxide of aluminium, e.g. gamma alumina ground to a particle size less than 0À1 Ám., with a lithium salt, e.g. Li 2 CO 3 , agglomerating the mixture into pellets, heating the pellets, e.g. up to 700‹ C., crushing, grinding or milling the product and annealing it or reheating it at 950‹ to 1000‹ C. The reaction mixture may contain Al 2 O 3 , Li 2 CO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 in such a ratio that the structure produced is already impregnated with an electrolyte comprising an eutectic mixture of Li 2 CO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 . In an alternative process the structure is prepared by pyrolysis of an inorganic or organic complex, e.g. lithium ammonium aluminium oxalate or the corresponding citrate or tartrate, LiAl(OEt) 4 , LiAl- (NO 3 ) 4 , Li 2 Al 2 (SO 4 ) 4 , LiAl(CNS) 4 and LiAl- (S 2 O 3 ) 4 . The products may be pastes or flexible or rigid materials. They may be shaped, using a blow pipe or torch and used in fuel cells having a silver cathode and operating at 500-900‹ C.
