A composite lining 9 for fitment to a coffin 8 comprises a loop of decorative material 11 elasticated along its upper edge and secured, by stitching, to a layer of padding material 10, itself inherently elastic, such as a foamed synthetic resinous material or padding of cotton or wadding material including elastic strands 14 secured to the padding material 10. The elastic strands 14 with the padding material 10, or the inherently elastic padding material are secured to the decorative material 11, whilst they are in a stretched state, so that when the complete lining 9 is in the unstretched state a shirred effect is provided over the decorative material 11 in contact with the elasticated padding 10. The lining 9 is secured to the coffin 8 by folding outwardly over the upper edge of the peripheral wall of the coffin the elasticated part of the lining 9, so that the folded-over portion of the lining grips the wall of the coffin 8 and supports the remaining part of the lining 9 which hangs within the coffin 8. |
