<p>Disclosed are an electro-mechanical brake system and a control method thereof. The electro-mechanical brake system according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a pair of pad plates with friction pads to press a disc; a carrier supporting the pad plates; a caliper housing supported to be movable forward and backward so that the pad plates can be pressed; a pressing member installed in the caliper housing, movable forward and backward, and pressing one of the pad plates; a spindle coupled to the pressing member; a driving motor generating a driving force; a gear assembly arranged between the spindle and the driving motor, having multiple gears transmitting a rotating force from the driving motor to the spindle, and having multiple locking holes in one of the gears thereof; a locking unit restraining the movement of the gear assembly by having a moving shaft inserted into one of the locking holes; a motor rotation angle sensor sensing information on the rotation angle of the driving motor; a parking switch turned on or off by a driver; and an electronic control unit controlling the operation of the locking unit in order to separate the moving shaft from the one of the locking holes so that a restraint on the movement of the gear assembly can be released, rotating the driving motor at a predetermined speed in the direction of releasing the operation of the electro-mechanical brake system after controlling the operation of the locking unit, sensing the information on the rotation angle of the driving motor through the motor rotation angle sensor, and determining the malfunction state of the locking unit based on a variation in the sensed rotation angle when the parking switch is turned off. According to the present invention, the malfunction state of the locking unit can be determined without the installation of an extra sensor sensing the operation state of the locking unit maintaining a brake force in order to perform the function of an electric parking brake.</p> |
