1,247,190. Mixing apparatus. E. L. MIDGETTE. 23 Dec., 1968 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 61157/68. Heading BIC. Mixing apparatus, particularly for dispersing particulate material such as paint pigment, in a liquid, comprises an impeller which rotates in the liquid. The impeller comprises a stack of spaced rings 19 on a base plate 12, spaced by washers 21 on securing bolts 20. One inner edge of each ring is bevelled to form a series of venturis between which the liquid and material flow by centrifugal force generated by viscous forces on the ring surfaces. The gaps between the rings may be of constant width outwardly of the bevelled part, as shown, or may widen (Fig. 6, not shown). The plate may have a further spaced ring above it (Fig. 7, not shown), or, for material which is difficult to wet, may have impeller vanes 15. In operation, the impeller is immersed in the centre of a container and rotated to create a central vortex in which the particulate material is dropped. The impeller is then moved towards the side of the container and rotation is continued until the material has dispersed. |
