摘要 Metal-ion battery cells are provided that take advantage of the disclosed “doping” process. The cells may be fabricated from anode and cathode electrodes, a separator, and an electrolyte. A metal-ion additive may be incorporated into (i) one or more of the electrodes, (ii) the separator, or (iii) the electrolyte. The metal-ion additive provides additional donor ions corresponding to the metal ions stored and released by anode and cathode active material particles. An activation potential may then be applied to the anode and cathode electrodes to release the additional donor ions into the battery cell.

A method of fabricating a metal-ion battery cell from anode and cathode electrodes, a separator, and an electrolyte, the method comprising: electrically connecting anode active material particles with an anode current collector to produce the anode electrode, wherein the anode active material particles are provided to store and release metal ions during battery operation; electrically connecting cathode active material particles with a cathode current collector to produce the cathode electrode, wherein the cathode active material particles are provided to store and release metal ions during battery operation; electrically separating the anode and cathode electrodes via the separator; incorporating a metal-ion additive into (i) one or more of the electrodes, (ii) the separator, or (iii) the electrolyte, wherein the metal-ion additive provides additional donor ions corresponding to the metal ions stored and released by the anode and cathode active material particles; assembling the battery cell from the anode and cathode electrodes and the separator; filling the assembled cell with the electrolyte; and applying an activation potential to the anode and cathode electrodes to release the additional donor ions into the battery cell.
