An ECU (2) of an engine (1) is provided with torque curves (20, 30, 40) for low fuel-consumption, which are set such that the fuel consumption is less than that of a regular torque curve (10), in addition to the regular torque curve (10) that is based on the performance of the engine (1). The ECU (2) is configured to include an output control means (M5) that, when the engine (1) is in operation, controls the output of the engine (1) along either the regular torque curve (10) or any of the torque curves (20, 30, 40) for low fuel-consumption, said curve being selected on the basis of the road load horsepower (PRL) and the excess horsepower (PEX) of the vehicle to which the engine (1) is mounted. Thus, discomfort felt by the driver by the output of the engine (1) can be mitigated whilst the amount of fuel consumed is reduced on the basis of the vehicle condition and the road condition.
|
