摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial light modulator having a high extinction ratio.SOLUTION: The spatial light modulator includes: an electro-optic crystal substrate which has a periodical polarization inversion structure in which a first polarization part and a second polarization part of which the directions of polarization generated by receiving an electric field are opposite are alternately arrayed periodically in a first direction, and through which light traveling along a second direction inclined to the first direction passes; a plurality of first electrodes provided on one principal surface of the electro-optic crystal substrate; a second electrode provided on the other principal surface of the electro-optic crystal substrate; and a modulation unit which changes diffraction efficiency in each of a plurality of areas in the periodical polarization inversion structure by controlling electric field generation between each of the plurality of first electrodes and the second electrode, to modulate light traveling in the area. The plurality of first electrodes are spaced from each other and are arrayed in a third direction substantially perpendicular to a traveling direction of diffracted light diffracted in the periodical polarization inversion structure, and the modulation unit applies a voltage to each of the plurality of first electrodes independently.
