[Also in Division C1] A method of joining bodies coated with porcelain comprises providing the bodies with porcelain coatings of reduced thickness in selected areas and joining these areas by an extraneous bonding agent. Iron or steel bodies may be precoated with Ni or Co to a thickness of a few atoms and then coated with a ceramic frit in an organic binder. The ceramic coating is then cured before its thickness is reduced in the selected areas, as by scraping, cutting or buffing. Firing follows to remove and/or destroy the organic binder and fuse the frit to form the porcelain coating. Suitable adhesives for bonding the bodies together and thermosetting or thermoplastic organic resins, e.g. the epoxy resins, thermosetting silicone resins and pressure sensitive thermoplastic polymers. The reduced thickness of the porcelain coating may be 0.25 to 3 mils, e.g. 1 or 1.5 mils.</p> |
