<p>[Problem] To provide a horizontally opposed engine with which thermal loss that causes cooling loss can be effectively reduced, and thermal efficiency can be further improved, in an internal combustion engine. [Solution] This horizontally opposed engine is provided with: a pair of pistons which are provided inside a cylinder disposed along a width direction of a vehicle, and which repeatedly slide closer to and away from each other as a result of combustion of a fuel in a combustion chamber; and a crankshaft part having, joined thereto, piston rods coupled to the pistons. The pair of pistons are accommodated inside the single cylinder. The combustion chamber is disposed between the pair of pistons. An intake valve, an exhaust valve, and an ignition device are provided to a cylinder block which demarcates the combustion chamber. The pair of pistons operate so as to separate from each other in an intake step, approach each other in a compression step, separate from each other in an explosion step, and approach each other in an exhaust step.</p> |
