An ECU (2) of an engine (1) is provided with torque curves (20, 30, 40) for low fuel-consumption, in addition to a regular torque curve (10) that includes a governing start point (12) which defines a governing-start rotational speed (NGS1) based on the performance of the engine (1). The torque curves (20, 30, 40) for low fuel-consumption are set such that the fuel consumption is less than that of a regular torque curve (10) and include governing start points (22, 32, 42) for low fuel-consumption which respectively define governing-start rotational speeds (NGS2, NGS3, NGS4) for low fuel-consumption, the rotational speeds of which are less than the governing-start rotational speed (NGS1). The ECU (2) is configured to include an output control means (M5) that, when the engine (1) is in operation, controls the output of the engine (1) along either the regular torque curve (10) or any of the torque curves (20, 30, 40) for low fuel-consumption, said curve being selected on the basis of the condition of the vehicle to which the engine (1) is mounted and/or the condition of the road. Thus, discomfort felt by the driver by the output of the engine (1) can be mitigated whilst the amount of fuel consumed is reduced on the basis of the vehicle condition and the road condition.
|
