PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of combining zoom control for preventing the frame out of a subject with zoom control for continuously keeping the size of the subject.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises: an operation unit for allowing a user to instruct a zoom operation; subject detection means for detecting the subject from an image; and control means for controlling the zoom operation in response to an operation on the operation unit. The control means is capable of executing a first mode for controlling the zoom operation on the basis of the position of the subject and a second mode for controlling the zoom operation on the basis of the size of the subject. The control means changes the conditions of the start and stop of the zoom operation on the basis of the detecting state of the subject by the subject detection means or the control state of the zoom operation.
