<p>Provided are: an electrolyte for redox flow batteries, capable of suppressing the generation of precipitates and hydrogen during battery reactions; and a redox flow battery comprising this electrolyte. The electrolyte for redox flow batteries has a total concentration of impurity element ions involved in the generation of precipitates during battery reactions of no more than 220 ppm by mass and a total concentration of platinum group element ions of no more than 4.5 ppm by mass. When the impurity element ions involved in the generation of precipitates include metal element ions, the total concentration of said metal element ions is no more than 195 ppm by mass.</p>
