By varying the populations of diamond particles in products to be labeled, multiple different identification systems can be obtained permitting authentication taggants for large numbers of different products.

A product which comprises a prescribed form of an authentication system which system comprises at least one population of fluorescent diamond particles wherein the wavelength, duration and intensity of the fluorescence emission of said particles is dependent on the wavelength, duration and intensity of the excitation energy, wherein said prescribed form consists of one homogeneous population of diamond particles, or wherein said prescribed form consists of one heterogeneous population of said particles; or wherein said prescribed form comprises at least two different homogeneous populations of fluorescent diamond particles; or wherein said prescribed form comprises at least one population that is homogeneous and at least one population that is heterogeneous; and wherein each different population has a unique fluorescence wavelength or intensity or duration or combination thereof.
