[Also in Division B2] A suede-like material is produced by applying a layer of a polyurethane elastomer solution to a support, coagulating the polyurethane solution by treatment with a coagulating bath to form a polymeric layer having a relatively large spongy structure in the inner part thereof, bonding a first substrate to the surface of the polymer layer by means of an adhesive, peeling off the support from the polymer layer, bonding a second substrate to the surface of the polymer layer exposed by peeling off the support by means of an adhesive, and tearing the polymeric layer in two along a plane extending through the centre of the layer by pulling the substrates apart. The support may be a glass or metal plate, or a synthetic polymer, e.g. nylon, polyester, polyethylene, polyvinyl alcohol or a derivative thereof. The polymer solution may comprise mixtures of polyurethanes and other polymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylic esters, polyvinylidene chloride, poly-alphamethyl styrene, polyamides, polyester amides, polyesters, polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile can be used in admixture with polyurethane elastomer. Pigments, dyestuffs, fillers and plasticizers may be included in the polymer solution. The coagulating bath may be made of a liquid which is at least partially miscible in the solvent for the polymer but which is not a solvent for the polymer, or a mixture of a solvent for the polymer and a non-solvent for the polymer. Suitable substrates are woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, non- woven fabrics and such fabrics finished with resins. The adhesive may be a two-part type polyurethane adhesive, a substantially linear, one-part type polyurethane adhesive, a mixture of polyvinyl acetate and a polyacrylate or a self-cross-linkable nitrile-butadiene rubber applied in the form of a solution or dispersion by spraying,brushing, roller coating orknife coating. The polymeric layer may be torn into two by hand or preferably by pulling the substrates in the opposite direction by the rotation of rollers. Prior to applying the polymer solution, there may be applied to the support a solution or dispersion which may also contain polymer of a coagulation regulator which is capable of making a polymeric layer having a microporous structure. Suitable coagulation regulators include hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, carboxylates, amides, nitriles, sulphonates, ureides or urethanes which contain an alkyl group having from 4 to 50 carbon atoms. A coagulation regulator such as an alkyl alcohol having an alkyl group containing from 4 to 50 carbon atoms may also be added to the polymer solution to give the inner part of the polymeric. layer a macroporous structure. The products are suitable for clothes, bags, shoe uppers and cloth for lining furniture. |
