The present invention is directed towards a method and apparatus for implementing an EPC gateway user plane comprising a configurator for configuring a plurality of processing components, each acting as a packet processing unit PPU, each PPU implementing the user plane functionality of a PGW or an integrated PGW and SGW for a certain number of parallel sessions called bearers, a downlink switch which maps IP traffic from an external packet data network PDN to a certain PPU, an uplink switch which maps GPRS tunnel protocol GTP traffic to a certain PPU, said configurator being adapted to configure said PPUs, the uplink switch and the downlink switch such that uplink and downlink traffic pertaining to a specific bearer are routed through a certain PPU. |
