摘要 1308337 Connecting pipes by screwing ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 31 March 1970 [4 April 1969] 15183/70 Heading B3N Apparatus for screwing together threaded pipe comprises power tongs 1 having a rotatable jaw 2 driven by a motor 5 energized by compressed air, as shown, hydraulic fluid or electricity; an hydraulic torque measuring instrument 21 adapted to send a signal to a transducer 25 which can produce an electric output signal which can be applied to an electronic controller 37; jaw 2 has projections 3 which can operate a microswitch 125 adapted to send pulses via an AND circuit 119 to a counter device 75. A strip chart (165), Fig. 2 (not shown), forms part of the controller 37 and records torque changes and the number of pulses transmitted. In operation, assuming coupling 181 to be fixedly attached to pipe 182, jaw 2 is rotated to screw up pipe 180. If a predetermined number of turns occur before a predetermined minimum torque is reached then a " reject " signal from a warble oscillator 55 occurs denoting the joining of the pipe and coupling is not achieved, viz. pipe 180 is not engaged with coupling 181. If a predetermined maximum torque is reached before a predetermined intermediate number of turns is reached then again the " reject " warble 55 is activated. This will be due to, for example cross-threading. If a minimum torque is reached before a predetermined low number of turns then yet again warble 55 is activated. A possible cause of this could be one of the cooperating threads being dirty. Satisfactory joining of the pipe and coupling is denoted by a constant frequency oscillator 52 which operates when a minimum torque is reached on or after an intermediate number of turns is reached but before a maximum number of turns is reached or when an intermediate number of turns is reached on or after a minimum torque is reached but before a maximum torque is reached. The apparatus can be used to join the pipes 180, 182 to coupling 181 simultaneously. In such case a microswitch 185 is utilized which sends pulses to a counter device 75<SP>1</SP> via an AND circuit 119<SP>1</SP>. Switch 189 has to be closed for such operation. Instead of warble 55 or oscillator 52 being operated a valve 11 in motor supply line 9 may be directly controlled.
