1,209,578. Pneumatic conveyers. TOBACCO RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE Ltd. 1 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 17066/69. Heading B8A. An airlock through which articles 10 of constant transverse cross-section throughout their lengths may be passed continuously between two spaces having different gas pressures, wherein an article present in the airlock serves as a valve member until it is replaced by a succeeding article, comprises at least two flap assemblies 6 arranged in line and spaced apart by a distance less than the length of the article, the flaps in each assembly defining and surrounding a hole complemental to, but smaller than the cross-section of the articles. Each flap assembly comprises a frame of sheet material with slits dividing it into separable flaps. The articles 10 are fed into the airlock, forming the entrance to a pneumatic conveyer, by a pair of pinch belts 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), each article is pushed into the airlock and is held there by spring loaded clamps until pushed and replaced, by the succeeding article. |
