Anorexigenic chloro-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1h-3-benzazepine - derivatives

Benzazepine derivatives with the general formula (I) and their addition salts with organic and inorganic acids are new compounds prepared from the corresponding dinitriles (II) by hydrogenation until 4 mol of hydrogen are absorbed, using a suitable catalyst. (in which one of the groups X is chlorine and the other H). Hydrogenation is pref. carried out in methanol in the presence of a rhodium-aluminium oxide as a catalyst at temperatures between 20 and 60 degrees C at 3-10 atm. pressure. Alternatively Raney nickel may be used as catalyst at 80-100 degrees C and a pressure of 50-100 atm. The catalyst is removed by filtration and the product isolated by removal of solvent, or alternatively converted directly to the corresponding acid addition salt by addition of acid. Used perorally, rectally or parenterally in doses from 25 to 200 mg for adults for treating anorexia.
