<p>Improving the flavour and smoking qualities of tobacco by the addn. of 0.05-5% by wt. of a lactic acid ester of an isoprenoid alcohol (I) and/or a polymer of a lactic acid (II). The isoprenoid alcohol pref. has the formula:- where n >= 2 (pref. 2-15), k = 1 or 2, depending on the position of the double bond and m is at least 1. Suitable isoprenoid alcohols are, e.g. naturally-occurring terpene alcohols such as nerol, geraniol or terpineol; sesquiterpene alcohols such as farnesol, or synthetic isoprenoid alcohols such as 2,6,10,14-hexadecatetraene-16-ol made by the polymn. of isoprene. (I) are pref. made by esterifying the alcohol with 3-25 (pref. 6-18, esp. 9) mol. equivs. of lactic acid to give an ester with an acid content of 0-0.045, an alcohol content of 0.4-2.5 and an ester content of 0.3-7.5 m. equivs./g.</p> |
