PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a further preferable gland packing with required characteristics by finding out a relationship with a value of the limiting oxygen index and appropriately defining propriety of the required characteristics, when making a gland packing using a yarn from fibers having a devised cross-sectional shape.SOLUTION: The gland packing is constructed by twisting or braiding a single or a plurality of yarns Y produced by twisting fibers s exhibiting a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 21-30 or preferably 22-26. The fibers s include a fiber that is defined to have a flatness f of 1.1 to 4 that is obtained by dividing a maximum value a of a distance between two parallel straight lines L1 and L2, with the fiber cross section sandwiched therebetween, by a minimum value b thereof. The fibers s include a fiber that has one or more recesses 1 with a depth h of 0.4 μm or more in the cross-sectional form. |
