PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that can irradiate a document sheet with light at an appropriate intensity according to a reading mode to be used, and has reduced the consumption of power associated with the irradiation with light, and an image forming apparatus including the same.SOLUTION: An image reading device 22 includes an illuminating device 50 and a control unit 80. The illuminating device 50 irradiates a document sheet on a document placing surface with light. The illuminating device 50 includes a first light guide body 52A and a second light guide body 52B. The first light guide body 52A and second light guide body 52B have a pair of first light sources 51A and a pair of second light sources 51B arranged respectively on both ends in the main scanning direction. The control unit 80 controls the light emitting operation of the first light sources 51A and second light sources 51B according to a reading mode in which an image of a document is read.
