1305258 Secondary and tertiary amines BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 25 June 1970 [26 June 1969] 30825/70 Heading C2C Secondary and tertiary amines are prepared by reacting formaldehyde with a primary or secondary amine respectively and hydrogenating the reaction product in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a saturated (C 4 - C 5 ) aliphatic alcohol as solvent, optionally admixed with water, at an elevated temperature and pressure. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature of from 0‹ to 200‹ C., in one stage, using 1À4 moles of formaldehyde for each methyl group to be introduced. Specified starting materials include, methylamine, stearylamine, dinonylamine, 1,4-tetramethylenediamine, 6 - cyano - n - hexylamine, benzylamine, diethylenetriamine, 1,4 - butanediol di - (3- aminopropyl) ether, cyclohexylamine aniline, morpholine, piperidine, piperazine, mono- and diethanolamine, cyclohexylbutylamine, 2-ethylhexylethylamine and stearylethylamine.
