Disclosed are isolated proteins comprising chimeric interleukin -1 (IL-1) family cytokine domains wherein a first segment of the domain is an IL-1 receptor agonist and the second IL-1 family cytokine is an IL-1 receptor antagonist, and both domains are selected from IL-1b, IL-1a and IL-1R. Further disclosed are methods to treat disorders, and to detect and/or bind to cellular receptors and pharmaceutical compositions.
