Pharmaceutical formulations comprising pioglitazone and linagliptin

Disclosed herein are pharmaceutical compositions comprising combinations of pioglitazone ((RS)-5-(4-[2-(5-ethylpyridin-2-yl)ethoxy]benzyl)thiazolidine-2,4-dione) and one or more diluents, a binder, a disintegrant, and a lubricant which is sodium stearyl fumarate, and a second part, composition or layer comprising linagliptin (8-[(3R)-3-aminopiperidin-1-yl]-7-(but-2-yn-1-yl)-3-methyl-1-[(4-methylquinazolin-2-yl)methyl]-3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione) and one or more excipients. Also disclosed are processes for the preparation of these compositions, and their use to treat diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity.
