An air- and liquid-permeable, net-reinforced paper is made by adding water-laying papermaking fibres to an open-network sheet of a homopolymer or copolymer of ethylene or a homopolymer of propylene. Preferably the sheet is passed between heated pressure rollers. Fibres referred to are beaten wood pulp, cotton, cotton linters, hemp, bagasse and esparto, acetate, polyamide or polyolefine fibres may be blended in, and wet-strength resins or softening agents may be added. The open network may comprise interwoven strands, strands laid across one another, moulded networks, random strands or perforated sheets (Figs. 1-13, not shown), if a copolymer is used it may be of ethylene and propylene or vinyl acetate, or methyl/methacrylate. The product is useful for making tea bags, as the cover layer of an incontinence pad, as tissue paper, decorative paper or for medical and surgical dressings. |
