[Also in Division C5] A process for the preparation of aromatic compounds, containing monoethylenically unsaturated radicals, in which at least one of the ethylenically doubly bonded carbon atoms is joined directly to the aromatic nucleus, comprises reacting a monoethylenically unsaturated compound with an aromatic hydrocarbon or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a palladium salt, e.g. palladium acetate or a complex formed between a palladium salt and the monoethylenically unsaturated compound. The reaction is preferably performed in an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid C 1-5 as reaction medium and may be carried out from room temperature to 200‹ C. Compounds of the general Formula I, II, III are suitably prepared by this process wherein X and Y represent a hydrogen or a halogen atom, an alkyl C 1-4 , phenyl or phenyl substituted by alkyl radical and in addition Y represents a nitrile, alkoxy C 1-4 , alkoxycarbonyl C 2-4 or alkanoyloxy C 2-4 radical, Z represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl C 1-12 , alkoxy C 1-12 , nitro, hydroxyl, mono- or dialkylamino, acylamino, carboxyl, nitrile or alkoxy carbonyl radical, n is 1 or 2 and m is 3-10. Examples describe the preparation of o-, m- and p-chlorostilbene, #-fluorostyrene, butyl-#- phenyl vinyl ether, o-, m- and p-methoxystyrene, α- and #-acetoxystyrene, trans-mnitrostilbene and α- and #-cyanostyrene. Specified compounds include #-chloro- and #-dichlorostyrene, methyl cinnamate, methyl α- methyl cinnamate, 1-(m-nitro phenyl)-2-p-tolyl ethylene, 1 - (p - dimethylamino phenyl) - 2- phenyl ethylene 1 - (p - dimethoxycarbonyl phenyl) - 2 - phenylethylene, and 1 - (phydroxyphenyl)-2-p-tolylethylene. |
